Three new mobile devices from Motorola. Report from the Milan premiere

Today in Milan, three new Motorola smartphones from the premium Edge 30 series made their European debut. One of them is the Edge 30 Ultra, the first camera on the market with a 200-megapixel sensor. However, shocks are not over yet. See what Motorola has in store for the second half of 2022.

Three models at different prices

Up till now, the Edge range consisted of flagship and premium models. However, the brand's marketing philosophy appears to be undergoing a substantial shift. The Edge 30 series consists of the flagship Edge 30 Ultra (Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, camera with the main module 200 MP), the powerful smartphone Edge 30 Fusion (chipset Snapdragon 888+), and, surprisingly, a popular class model called Edge 30 Neo (Snapdragon 695).

Motorola Edge 30 Ultra, a show of the manufacturer's strength

The smartphone Edge 30 Ultra was tasked with carrying the strain of the market battle against the competition's flagships. It has the best Qualcomm chipset on the market - Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of memory for data, an OLED screen, FHD +, 144 Hz with bent sides and a diagonal of 6.67 inches, a sub-screen fingerprint reader, WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, USB 3.1, stereo speakers, and a 4610 mAh battery with 125 W fast charging capability (50 W wireless charging).

The housing of the phone is comprised of Gorilla Glass 5 (front and matte back) and metal (frame) and is splash-resistant ( IP52 certified ). Here, I'm a little disappointed, as I was anticipating genuine waterproofing (IP65 or IP68)

The smartphone's primary camera will become one of its most distinguishing features. The standard module received a matrix with the greatest available resolution: 200 MP (f/1.9, PDAF, OIS, 1 / 1.22" matrix). 50 MP wide-angle modules (f/2.2, AF, macro function) and 2x 12 MP tele modules (f/1.6, PDAF) provide support. The front camera is a single 60 MP wide-angle module (f/2.2, FF) with an f/2.2 aperture. The dimensions of the phone are 161.8 x 73.5 x 8.4 mm and its weight is 199 grams.

Motorola Edge 30 Fusion - cheaper, still efficient and imitation leather backs

The second new productis the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion. This smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon 888+ CPU and features 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of data storage. It also received a 120Hz OLED display with a 6.55-inch diagonal and FHD+ resolution, a WiFi 6E card, Bluetooth 5.2, and NFC.

The internal battery has a capacity of 4400 mAh, and it is charged using 68 W. However, it's shocking that the Edge 30 Fusion lacks wireless charging functionality.

As with the Edge 30 Ultra, the smartphone's case is composed of Gorilla Glass 5 and aluminium, and it has received only the IP52 rating for splash resistance. The navy blue Edge 30 Fusion model with a faux leather-covered back will also be available in retailers.

The smartphone's primary camera has a regular module with a resolution of 50 megapixels, a wide-angle module with 13 megapixels, and a module for evaluating the scene's depth. The front-facing camera has a 32 MP resolution and an AF system.

The Edge 30 Fusion has dimensions of 158.5 by 72 by 7.5 millimetres and weighs 175 grammes..

Motorola Edge 30 Neo - the Edge series ceases to be elite

The most recent development is the Motorola Edge 30 Neo. This phone's price of PLN 1,899 and its inclusion of the popular Snapdragon 695 CPU are somewhat surprising. It includes 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage for files.

The Neo is a tiny, lightweight, and neat phone (152.9 x 71.2 x 7.8 mm, 155 grams). It also features a 6.28-inch OLED display with 120 Hz and FHD+ resolution.

The advantage of the smartphone is its wireless battery charging capability, even if it is only 5W. The more expensive Edge 30 Fusion does not have this feature. Case? Or perhaps there is some disorder and inconsistency in Motorola's design department? Irrelevant. The Edge 30 Neo is the least expensive phone on the market with this capability. Additionally, the battery with a capacity of 4020 mAh is rapidly charged via wire with a power output of 68 W. I must confess that Motorola has finally closed the gap between itself and the competition in terms of power section characteristics. In addition, compatible wall chargers can still be found in the packaging of new phones.

This camera is obviously less technically impressive than more pricey models. However, the basic module has a resolution of 64 MP (f/1.8, AF, OIS) and is quite promising. It comes with a 13-megapixel wide-angle lens module. In the front is a 32-megapixel digital camera without an autofocus system.

The Neo series is further characterised (at least by the manufacturer's mandate) by the fact that the colours of the various smartphone editions are based on the Pantone colour palette, a current trend in the design and fashion markets (maybe this is why Milan has become the world's fashion capital). Edge 30 Neo is available in Veri Pery (purple), Black Onyx (black), Ice Palace (white), and Aqua Foam (blue) (green).

You, the purchasers and users of the new smartphones, will largely determine whether or not they become market leaders. On our end, we will develop editorial examinations for you. I hope they can throw some insight on whether Motorola has done its homework and manufactured trustworthy equipment for the upcoming school year 2022/2023. We'll see.
