NAB decides to withdraw appeals against Asif Ali Zardari's acquittal in 25-year-old case:

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking withdrawal of appeals against the acquittal of former president and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari in a 25-year-old case. 

Nab has argued in the petition that further prosecution of appeals will be a futile exercise, photocopies of documents against Asif Zardari are also hardly on record, the available documentary evidence is not in accordance with the evidence law. 

Public money wasted on fabricated cases to hurt political enemy. A case should be started against those wasted public money on politically motivated cases. 


It has been further reported that Asif Ali Zardari was acquitted in Arsus Tractor, ARY Gold, Polo Ground and SSG Kotna. 

In December 2015, the NATIONAL Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) against the acquittal of former president and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari in the SGS and Kotekna references. 

On November 24, Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir acquitted Asif Ali Zardari in the SGS and Kotekna references on the grounds of lack of evidence. 

In a petition filed by NAB against the acquittal in the Islamabad High Court, it was requested by the court to set aside the decision of the accountability court, saying that the trial court gave the verdict in haste without assessing the seriousness of the accused's crime. 

The petition said that the trial court gave the verdict on the basis of assumptions and speculation, which has no significance in the eyes of law. 

During the hearing of the references, the trial court sought original documents from the prosecution, on which prosecution witness and former DEPUTY CHAIRPERSON of NAB Hassan Waseem Afzal told the court that he had already submitted the original documents to the accountability bench comprising Justice Ehsanullah Haq Chaudhry and Justice Raja Muhammad Khursheed, but his reply was rejected. The trial court did not even bother to ask for original documents from the accountability bench of the Lahore High Court. 

Both the references against former president Asif Ali Zardari and Benazir Bhutto were made in 1998 during the tenure of former NAB chairman Saif-ur-Rehman. 

In both the references, Asif Ali Zardari and Benazir Bhutto were accused of receiving commission in awarding shipping contracts to foreign companies. 

In September 2011, an accountability court in Rawalpindi acquitted former Central Bureau of Revenue (CBR) Chairman A R Siddiqui, the lone arrested accused in the Kotekna case, on the ground of lack of evidence.

Brutal crackdown by the government could not deter people from coming out of their homes and heading towards Islamabad

 The government’s crackdown on PTI workers and supporters made it clear that they have decided to stop PTI’s Independence March at all cost. News reports say more than 1,000 PTO workers and activists have been arrested.  The government has called in the Rangers to maintain law and order in Islamabad and other major cities of the country, including Karachi.
