screen time can cause dangerous eye problems in children

Looking on screen reduces the blinking process to a great extent, experts say

Somerset: Experts have warned that due to the increase in time spent in front of children's screen, they may face a painful condition of the eye that usually affects adults.

Drying of the eye occurs when tears do not keep the eyes properly. Usually, this disease occurs in people between the ages of 50 and 60 years and if left untreated, it can become very painful.

People suffering from this pain have compared the feeling of discomfort to the irritation in the eyes while cutting onions.

Sarah Ferrant, an ophthalmologist and dry eye specialist, said she was watching young children with this problem come to her.

She attributed this partly to an increase in screen time because looking on screen greatly reduces the blinking process.

She said that when she started her clinic 15 years ago, not a single child was suffering from this condition. But in the last five or six years, there has been an increase in the number of children suffering from dry eye. Her youngest patient was six years old, who had never been heard of before.

She said that the increasing trend of makeup in children can also cause an increase in this eye problem. If left untreated, this condition can cause irreversible damage to the tear-forming glands in the eyelids.
